Sorry for the blog radio silence, we were busy crafting! I wanted to brighten up my apt a tad and figured, instead of buying new furniture, I could try out some unique DIY ideas! This was my first DIY attempt, and while it may not be my last, let’s just say it will be a LONG time before I attempt to make anything major on my own again!
I got this Ikea hack for a beautiful gold and marble bookcase from Style Me Pretty, and I may be biased, but I think it turned out pretty well!
Living in an apartment complex, it’s pretty hard to find large, open, airy spaces for spray painting. Luckily for me, I live on the floor with the roof and the bookshelf wasn’t too heavy so we were able to spray paint outside. Seriously, how do other people spray paint in an apartment building – please tell me! After managing to get spray paint everywhere (read: my hands, arms, hair, and nose π the painting was complete and we were able to bring the shelf unit inside to dry. At this point, my girlfriend and I took a little wine break, as I was a tad stressed out with this whole process! I just wish we had more space! While the unit was drying, we picked 2 shelves to line with the marble contact paper – actually not as easy as it sounds! We had to cut the paper just right so that it laid in the designated shelf unit and didn’t buckle. We left everything overnight and then assembled it all the next morning.
Now, it’s nowhere near perfect (there are still some small paint droplets and bubbles), but I’m so proud I was able to create something on my own that I find the little imperfections give it character.
All that’s left to do now is decorate with your favorite little nick-necks!
